Artist's retreat

A precise transformation of an overlooked attic into a light-filled artist’s loft overlooking the marsh.

This project began with an unused storage space above the garage and evolved into a new artist’s loft that fundamentally changed the way the house is used. Significant structural work—including a new footing, steel beam, and reframed roof—made room for a custom stair, a series of skylights, and expansive windows framing views across the marsh.

The work was deliberately quiet and highly detailed: trimless fixtures, carefully resolved transitions, and a custom stair designed to meet the baseboard with an almost seamless connection. The new loft also created a new circulation path through the house, making the addition feel integral rather than incidental.

Elsewhere, we renovated four bathrooms, rebuilt two exterior decks, refreshed the main living spaces, and upgraded the electrical system with two SPAN panels. The result is a more complete version of a house the owners use as a kind of private retreat—a place designed around light, views, art, and an unusually exacting level of detail.
